Elder Fox Jenkins

 Or is it Henry Jenkins?

Fox Jenkins

Either way Fox or Henry Jenkins are the names given the father to Garrison, Willie, John or even Bob Jenkins. There is documentation for sure (mainly family trees on Ancestry) that show Willie and John Jenkins father as a Henry Jenkins. It's mostly oral that Garrison Jenkins' father is Fox Jenkins.

Looking at the census reports discussed earlier that Garrison, Willie, John and Bob Jenkins had listed both of their parents as originating from Virginia. I was also told at one point that Fox Jenkins may well have come from Cape Town, South Africa - that's to be proven.

The last time I spoke about this I mentioned there was some documentation for Fox and Henry Jenkins. For Fox himself it's primarily estate & tax documents out of Baker County, Georgia. Which I will share with you here.

In this one Fox Jenkins is listed as a Freedmen. His employer is listed as a Gallaway.

Now this is a probate/estate document out of Barker County, Georgia. Now that I see the contest of the above property tax document it puts this page in perspective. I thought somehow that it showed Grandfather Fox as a slave perhaps this is in the same time period between 1874 and 1878, Just remember the America Civil War freed the slaves.

You will see here that this is an inventory and appraisement of the estate of C.M. Gollaway and many of the names you see on this document as enslaved persons. You will see dollar amounts to the right. Fox Jenkins you see near the bottom was $16.72. It's shocking to find that and I failed to find a date for this document but again the dates Ancestry is giving me is after the Civil War. Was this compiled after the slaves were freed?

The only other documentation for Henry Jenkins is out of Claiborne County, Mississippi - if you don't know where that is it's the location of the HBCU Alcorn State University. He's with his family wife Patsy and his children which includes John and Willie (William).

And guess what? Henry Jenkins was also found in 1900 in Baker County Georgia. It leads me to believe he was indeed the same person as Fox Jenkins.  He's living with a Giles and Georgia Shiver. Henry is a farm worker although he's 80 at this point. He's listed as being from Virginia along with his parents whoever they may be.

If Fox is a nickname, how did he get it? What about the other children Henry had with Patsey? There isn't much info on them. And of course what explains the age difference between Garrison, Willie, and John Jenkins if they're supposed to be brothers.

If anyone knows of this Henry Jenkins or knows him as Fox Jenkins feel free to e-mail me.
