Tribal Affairs

Jenkins
This blog started just last year more or less as a way to further share some of my discoveries once I went onto Ancestry & FamilySearch.org.

After my maternal family reunion in July 2023 which took place in an village that is considered my "ancestral homelands" - Mound Bayou, Mississippi - I decided to take on a new journey in discovering my roots. Who were my Jenkins ancestors?

The only ancestors I knew about were my grandfather Levi Jenkins and his wife (my grandmother) Evelyn Jenkins. I knew about his father Tom Jenkins (my great-grandfather) who passed away decades before I was born. His wife was Georgia Jenkins whom my father also named Levi viewed fondly from his childhood growing up in Mound Bayou, MISS.

Beyond that, I knew nothing about Tom's origins or even if he had other relatives beyond his own family. Sometime after getting back home from Mound Bayou, I took a look at some real estate legal documents which involved the sale of Tom's land in Mississippi. It led me to his brother known as Will Jenkins and Will's wife Cora. Also it told me when Tom passed away which was in early 1934.

I had a lead from an uncle who somehow knew that the Jenkins family origin was in McComb, MISS. That city is located not that far away from the Mississippi-Louisiana state line in Pike County. It led me to the discovery of Tom's parents and his brothers and sister and possibly his Jenkins uncles and their families.

Turns out there are a whole universe of people who are not only related to Tom's family, also to his brothers and sisters and certainly his many possible first cousins. To trace this journey as best as possible has been a bit of a satisfying journey and hopefully will be able to share with you my discoveries as the Jenkins Tribal Historian.

ALSO, while my mother married into the family she was invaluable in the information she was able to provide and she herself met many members of the extended family. She didn't realize for example that she met the son of yet another Levi Jenkins who just so happens to be my grandfather Levi's uncle.

One tendency I've found about the Jenkins is that they do name their children for other members of their family.

If you're a Jenkins feel free to e-mail me and let me know how we might be related.
